We went to Naples to see relatives in 1999, and they took us out fishing on their boat. To everyone's surprise, at one point during the day a wild manatee swam up to the boat to check us out. They've lived there for years and it had never happened to them before. Guess we were just lucky!

We went to Crystal River recently and a couple of us laid down on the jetty to stroke the manatees. They came close to the jetty and we could reach down and stroke them and softly scratch their bodies. The one I was stroking rolled over and we were told to softly scratch and rub their tummies. They loved this and didn't leave for ages. What a fantastic experience it was and I feel honoured that they allowed us and trusted us to do that. We wouldn't have done this but the people who take you out in the boats were telling us what to do. I have swum with dolphins but would now love to swim with the manatees. What wonderful mammals they are.
