Credit card chip & pin problem!

Before I start, i just want to say hello to all the members of this great site. I have browsed these forums for awhile now without the need to register since there is alot of great information available!

Unfortunately I now I have a big problem which requires me to post a new question. I going away to florida on friday, and I've chosen to rent a car with budget at sanford airport. I understand that they swipe your credit card for a deposit, but I cant remember my chip and pin![msnsad] I requested that a new one be sent to me but the earliest is by next monday (too late since im renting the car on friday evening!) I was wondering whether renting a car with budget requires you to enter your pin for the deposit or they just swipe it (in which case I would get away with not knowing the pin, at least until next week when I can ring back to the UK and ask someone to tell me it)

    Many Thanks,
    Geoff

The US do not have a chip and pin for credit cards, it's still the old fashioned way.

Have never used a pin number in the US, and most of the time no one has even checked my signature. Often the card is returned before I'm asked to sign anything.

its the credit or debit bit that always gets me when they ask..

.. we dont have a choice here in the UK.

but using credit when i know the account is almost empty would be usefull sometimes

And yet some stores want to see photo ID when you use a credit card as opposed to a debit card (when you do use a pin)but I'm not sure they check those properly either

Ok this is what i've learned since we have been here.

If i use my Amex (credit) card, they just swipe and sign, occasionally they ask for zip code such as in Walmart.

If i use my Bank of America (credit) card, they ask "credit or debit" i answer credit and they just swipe and sign.

If i use my Bank of America (debit) card, they ask "credit or debit"
If i answer debit, they swipe and i have to enter my pin, and don't sign
If i answer credit, they swipe and i sign and the money still comes out as if its a debit card.

All of this refers to US based cards, but what i can gather is if you say credit when asked, even if its a debit card, it will work, as it has the visa or mastercard logo but the money will be deducted straight out as if it was a debit transaction.

    Hope that makes sense[msnwink]

djoddy00 - My son did not have a Credit Card and was able to give them Cash as a deposit and got it back when he returned the car.

Me & the Mrs were some of the first Trials when Bank of America slapped your photo on the Cards , Never been asked for photo ID since then , not a good picture mind you , but it works
