Pay as you go mobiles - US type

Can anyone please advise if they have bought a US mobile and top up card when out there - I was there in the summer and my UK mobile bill was nearly £300 for 2 weeks!!!

Any advice on where to purchase, cost etc would be much appreciated.

    Thank you

We have a Tracfone http://www.tracfone.com which we purchased in Wal-Mart for $70 odd. We just purchase a top up card on each visit as we're not fussed about keeping the same number but you can purchase annual top ups if you wish.

When we were out in March we saw Coast to Coast Walkie Talkies being advertised I think they were from Sprint.

Anyone used these and would they recommend them.

We did have the basic ones for use around the malls and theme parks until someone nicked them from the villa

I'm out here at the moment and purchased a Virgin Mobile on Monday. $79.00 with $10 worth of calls inculded.

It was easy to set up and use. However, if you are out on any of the hwy27 communities then there is very little reception until you hit either I4 or 192.

I have to top-up the card every 3 months with $20 to keep the same number, and as I'm here every 3 months its not too much trouble.

Hi have just picked up on the cost of your phone bill and shuddered.

As if by luck (we thought) Elaine's and my phones have come up for replacement so have gone with tri-band and was feeling smug until I saw your message.

Without being rude any chance of you advising whole long you we on the phone for to clock up such a bill?

    Many thanks
    David

    Chrizzy,

I did try my mobile again at the top of the hill at Calabay and it was fine. It just wouldn't work were my home is as its down an incline so reception is not so good. Just needed to walk up the hill a bit and it was ok. So everyone just s**** what I said before about not much good on the 27.[:I]

We found it worked fine in the show house a few doors down from our plot.....we got a mobile because we were not going to have a phone line to the house....then forgot we needed it for the alarm.....how dumb is that.......so we are trying to get our phone company to add the Villa phone bill to our one here....like a second line that only lets you have 3 call out numbers.......plus 911....here that would cost us only $5 a month......talking about alarms....ours will be $25 a month is that good for the area....?
