    Digital cameras

    Hi there,

We are coming to Orlando next week and I am after a digital camera.

Can anyone tell me where's the best and cheapest place to get one.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi... Walmart do some good cameras if you just want a camera, also check out Ritz cameras in Florida Mall or go to www.ritzcameras.com may give you an idea on prices, dont forget to add tax on.....

I'm not sure that best and cheapest go hand in hand. [msnwink]

If you want the cheapest there are heaps of camera shops all around Orlando. Just look for the big Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. signs. This also goes with a caveat emptor in that there are also heaps of rumours that while you get a bargain price you don't always get the most up-to-date models, or sometimes the full specification.

If you want the best it might vary depending on whether you know exactly what you are looking for and/or whether you are looking for a bit of advice. If you are after some advice then somewhere like Ritz Camera should be excellent. If you know what you are looking for and are staying in a villa you could consider ordering the kit online and have it shipped to the villa. Check with the owner but for privately rented villas it shouldn't be a problem; and the owner might even be able to give you an alternative address to receive the package just before you arrive so that it can be there and waiting for you. Adorama, B&H Photo and curiously enough Amazon (.com) are all excellent places to shop online.

It is best to do some research and find out exactly what model you want, then start price hunting. I always found that the small independent shops would do the best deals on quality end equipment. Cash works well[msnwink]

As Steve mentiond there are the "Tac-tourist" shops on the 192 and I-Drive if you do go to one of these and purchase any item ensure you open the box and inspect the item before you part with funds and ensure the item does not go out of site before you walk out of the shop. It has been known for someone to buy a Sony camera and when they got back to there hotel and opend the box it was a pattend camera and on the box was written simular to the Sony Camera and because it had these words on the box apparently the seller was not in breach of any law so the police wouldnt intervene.
You can always try BestBuy aswell and Tartget stores

You can checkout prices at Best Buy and Circuit City online before you go (don't forget to add sales tax) you can order from these stores and pick up when you get there. Sometimes there are internet offers to be had. As Martin says, do research first as you are not always saving enough to make it worth using a big chunk of your duty free allowance

Is there any evidence of this? I used the camera shops on the 192 for a few years (and also sent a lot of guest that way too) and never had a problem, you just need to go in armed with the correct price for you. I have never had any attempt to rip me of in this way. I always found these smaller independant stores to be better on price than the big boys who are usually fixed on price. I always started with the bigger stores and then work down.

    A US charger.

Usually this shouldn't be a problem for you. Almost all battery chargers these days use a figure-of-8 mains cable. You probably have such a cable already in the UK (especially if you ever owned a tape recorder 10 or 20 years ago). Just check that the battery charger is universal voltage, most are, and then swap the cable once home.

I wouldn,t touch the shops on the 192 / international drive , you know the ones that say Sony or Nikon on them . I am a professional photographer so you would think I would know better , but even I was caught out a couple of years ago . I was in the market for a new expensive canon lens , I went into a couple of these shops and was sucked in by the Asian owners knowledge of the canon lens I wanted , it was not much cheaper than the big stores but as I say I was sucked in . Any way I bought the lens for $1100 cash but when I got home and tried to register the warranty with Canon , I was told the lens was from the grey market , a cheaper version of the original.
I went back to the shop ,and was told the guy who sold it no longer worked there and there was a no refund policy [ unless faulty]

Also one of my guests broke their video camera and went into another of these shops and thought she was getting a good deal at $399 for a camera that is normally $475 ,but it broke down 1 week after she got home and later found out she had been sold a reconditioned camera ,which was now unreparable after only 3 weeks .

I know would only buy from Best Buy , Walmart, Ritz, Target ect .

P.s when I was in the market for new pro gear I order online from Costco and get it delivered to my villa
