    AA Flight - stopover query

We have only ever flown direct. If we were to fly with AA and have a changeover at New York with a 6 hour duration could we actually leave the airport and see just a little of the city or do we need to remain in the airport. This may seem a silly question but I can't get any details from the site.

6 hours sounds a huge amount of time, but is exactley very tight if you want to leave the airport on the outbound trip at least.

As you will be going through immigration and collect your luggage before the agricultural check and then pass it on to the recheckin luggage area, and then co through security again.

Also depends on if you are flying both legs of the journey with the same carrier, then they check you in for both, or if you are flying with another airline you will have to check in again, as well which airport you are flying into as well, although all new york airports are pretty good with connecting flights, some airlines do not communicate very well with other airlines when it comes to connecting times.

I have now been using New York as a connecting flight for just under 2 years now, and have managed to make my connections with some seconds to spare on occasions. From touch down and take off I will now always leave at least 2 hours for get through everything. So with this in minute you will have to think about rush hour, new york traffic etc, can you do this and get back in time. This would be a good option if it was on your return journey as you only go through security once at Orlando and never see you luggage again until the UK.

Wasn't aware about not seeing the luggage again on the return flight. Kept thinking how full they would be and having to be lugging them around, thanks Ceri

Well you won't really have to bother either trip with your luggage. On the outward bound it is just a case of picking them up and handing them back in after you have cleared customs.

Is the 6 hour layover because you want it to be 6 hours?

Assuming you are going to Orlando there are much better routes to London Heathrow, or are you flying from Stansted?(JFK serves both)

Anyway 6 hours will be enough for a whistle stop tour, but it will be rushed.

Say 45 mins to 1hr to deplane and get through immigration. Allow 45 mins in taxi to NY city, further 45 mins back. Need to be back 1 hr before flight time, so in total you have used about 3.5 of your 6 hrs. Add on another half an hour for security queue on the way to check in for your onward flight.

You're not going to see much of NY in 2 hrs, and you would probably spend most of that time checking your watch and worrying about getting back in time.

You could cut it finer, I suppose, and get maybe another hour at most. Better than sitting in the airport. Personally, I would suggest either a longer or shorter layover - JFK isn't a great place to be stuck for more than a couple of hours, but I think you need an 8 hr layover to make a trip into the city worthwhile.

    Short answer is NO

I have done a number of business trips to New York and the time from Downtown or Central Park area to the airport varies from 45 mins to 2 hours. It should be a quick and easy journey, and most of the time it is.

However if you do get in a holdup especially in rush hour it would be very easy to miss your flight. As this would be your fault you would then be trying to buy new tickets down to Orlando. As these flights are often well booked you could also be looking for a hotel for the night.

I agree - by coincidence I flew AA into JFK this weekend and it took around 25 minutes to get from the plane to airside (and I didn't have checked luggage). Your domestic flight will depart from the same terminal (8) but you'll have to go through security again and that can easily take 25 minutes.

While there are a few US airports where 6 hours would be enough to do something useful, JFK isn't 1 of them!
