I think you'll find you can purchase a scheduled flight more than 11 months in advance if you go through a travel agent rather than online. We've certainly done this is the past.

You can but you are still on waiting list. So it is not 100% garanteed.

You can book a charter but the flight is not 100% garanteed they an still switch on you.
The 11 months has something to do with security (not sure what) and also with costs. Airlines buy fuel in advance and I believe this is done 12 months out. So they cannot 100% garantee the fuel costs.

The other way to get a scheduled airline (I think in particulat with Virgin) is to book the flight as part of a fly-drive holiday. They are bookable well in advance of the schedule seats being released, don't know if you get the best price or seat allocation (and other permutations), but at least you get the flight dates that you want. In saying that the contract with the airlines or the tour companies definitely seems to be in their favour, they can choose what they want when they want with little recompense, but if you want to change something .....
