No more BA Manchester to New York

BA is withdrawing its daily service from Manchester to JFK in October 2008.

This means that BA no longer operate a single long haul route from a provincial airport. Looks like Manchester passengers will be able to share the pleasures of Terminal 5 from now on (provided they don't have checked bags of course).

Thanks for the info. Are they changing the name from British Airways to London Airways now?

What I don't get is that US airlines like American, Delta & Continental manage to sustain services from UK provincial airports but our supposed national flag carrier can't. I really can see the day when BA operate no services at all from outside the capital.

I think the UK is going in the wrong direction with trying to focus so many international flights only going into London. Other countries successfully have thriving regional airports, which might only have one or two long haul carriers but they work. I doubt everyone wants to fly in and out of London and if we are meant to be cutting down on our carbon footprint etc etc then we should be looking at regional transport links more carefully.

Airlines only have a certain number of aircraft and they will put them to use on the most profitable routes. Unlike many other countries subsidies are not offered to fly from regional airports.
The 767 that operated the Manchester service is being returned to Heathrow and a 777 is being used for a new JFK 4 cabin daily service from Gatwick

I get angry that large airlines can't sustain a service from Manchester. This is one of the largest airports in the UK.

I won't use BA anymore (I used to rate them) because of this journey to Heathrow before you even start!
