Sounds fab Marie, but as I mentioned in original post she is diabetic and can't travel far so it's turning into a bit of a mare as foodie or travel related gifts are out
    [/quote]

i thought it would be tame travel and in luxury so she may get away with it and i would like to think that given notice the orient could well and truly cater for a diabetic

i like the afternoon tea idea too and i think if it's a place noted for their tea and service then catering for a diabetic shouldn't be too much of a problem [msnsmile]

We've looked at the Orient Express but like CDV my FIL is diabetic and refuses to go far from home, he was fine till he starte dinjections and then fusses he wont be where he needs to be at the time he needs them. They only really get out of the house to go to the shop each day and hospital visits.

The Orient Express was in when we went to London the other day and it does look as though it would be a great trip for those who like that sort of thing.

FIL is also the fussiest eater I have ever known too which doesn't help either so foodie is out definately.

We took them to a nice restaurant in the Mosel a few years back when MIL could travel and wasn't so ill and we ordered cream of tomato soup and it came out as you would expect over here in Germany, homemade with a huge dollop of cream on top and they both went "yuck" and scopped it out/off..............

I'm demented with it all, is it going to end up a twin set and flowers[msnscared]

We had a Christmas lunch on the Orient Express a few years ago and then more recently went on one of their special Dinner nights both trips were fabulous but definitely not for plain eaters.

What about some sort of pamper type thing from someone who will come to the house if she doesn't want to go out. Or if she does want to go out one of the hotels might do something (it sounds like you're Torbay area)Feet, hair, nails, massage, facial?

What about a getting a family photo and having put on a large canvas to make it a touch more contemporary[msnwink]

Something DH has just done for me - if you have any old cine films have them transfered onto a DVD[clap] So much fun looking at really old family film[msnwink]

Last year my Aunt was 90 and I asked for similar advice too. Getting the right present was very difficult because of her failing eyesight and physical and mental abilities. I ended up getting her a lovely embroidered wrap (she spends most of her day sitting indoors), a personalised bottle of champage with a fluffy toy (she collects these), a Swarovski broach and some special chocolates.

Her children made up a hamper of all sorts of everyday items she could use. There must have been 40 or 50 smallish items, all individually wrapped. She had a wonderful time unwrapping them all and delighted in being the center of attention for the day.

My daughter has got to the age where she has most of what she wants, or can buy it herself, so for Christmas she asked for a variety of pink things. I had great fun buying all things pink and wrapping them in pink paper. She was delighted.

When my Aunt(same one) had her 50th wedding anniversay , her family again did a hamper for both parents of anything gold coloured. They included things like Gold Blend coffee and some tea that had Gold in it's name.

I am mentioning these things as it may give you an idea for theming a hamper.

Hope this helps as I know how difficuly this can be.

Is MIL housebound Jacqueline, as the 2 hotels I mentioned are literally within a couple of miles of where she lives. I know the Imperial and The Palace would have no problem catering for diabetics.
