    gold or siver option

    Hi Folks

My son is going to our villa for the 1st time on his own in a few weeks , he is going to hire the obligitary convertable [ he will learn ] Anyway as he is going on his own and will be the only driver ,should he still book the gold option insurance ? or would silver be enough ?. When we go over as a family we always book gold as we have 3 drivers .

    Thanx

The difference between gold and silver is not really a matter of the number of drivers involved, but more so the cover.

If he opts for the gold option both you and he can be reassured that he will not be charged any additional extras, assuming of course he is of a legal age to rent a vehicle.

Depends how long he is going for, if only between 1 and 2 weeks Gold is the best option as the fuel costs will be included as well. if any longer than 3 weeks the silver option is cheaper. the difference between the gold option for three weeks or more is higher than the cost of the fule they charge you on arrival.

Having the extra driver on the policy on gold is automatic, on the silver option as far as I am aware you can still get the additional driver with one of the supplier, but not sure which.

The only difference is the fuel policy and the number of drivers:

    Silver:
Dollar = 2 drivers, pay for a tank of fuel (or now you can take back full to avoid this)
Alamo = 1 driver, pay for a tank of fuel
Budget = 2 drivers, return full

    Gold:
Dollar = Unlimited Drivers, free tank of fuel
Alamo = 4 drivers, free tank of fuel
Budget = Unlimited drivers, free tank of fuel.

    Roger,

With the silver option from Alamo can you have the same offer on the fuel in that you bring it back full and only pay for a top-up if necessary.

Or are you paying for a full tank and you bring it back "empty" because you have paid for it?

With Alamo on Silver you must return as empty as possible. Regardless of how much fuel you leave in the tank (even if full) you will be charged a full tank at around double pump price.

What you you think a full tank on a full size SUV(Dodge Durango or similar) would be charged at allowing for double pump prices ?

My guess would be around $130 on that car type as they will charge around $7 per gallon. In most cases the Gold option will work out cheaper unless you are staying a few weeks.

We took the Gold Option last year with Alamo and we had a Highlander. We took the bigger car than normal as we were doing the wedding/honeymoon etc and it was a treat.

It was well worth it. I think we got to Sanford on "air" though!!
