    Car Rental at Miami Port

    Hi,

We are going on a short (4 day) cruise from Miami in the middle of our vacation in Orlando. We are considering whether to do 2 separate car rentals or keep the car parked at the port for convenience when we dock. Where is the nearest drop off/collection point to Miami port? Is it easy to get there....given that we have 3 small children?

You can drop off your car hire just outside Miami airport, and they have a free shuttle to the port. The depot is just off Le Jeune Avenue which is close to the airport.

We normally drop our car off and either take the shuttle from there or get a taxi. It is quite simple. We like to get to the dock early to avoid all the crowds - there will be many other ships leaving on the same day so try to get there early. You will find it easier at the car hire depot, too, if you do not leave it until peak times when everyone is trying to get to the port. I would suggest getting to the depot about 11.00am at the latest as you will find they will allow you on board ship around midday - not at 2.00 pm as is often suggested. Then you can have a relaxing lunch and a look around whilst everyone else is queuing to get on. This way the shuttle will not be packed, although they do run them very frequently, and the buses go as soon as they are full.

On the way back we don't bother to wait for a shuttle as we just get a taxi and get ourselves to the depot as it is quicker and more convenient. There will be many people getting off the ship at the same time, and for the small amount it costs to have your own taxi it is well worth it as you don't have to wait around for the shuttle bus to arrive. I would definitely recommend this route if you have small children.

Hope you have a great time in Orlando - you will have such fun! Hope you also enjoy your cruise.

Thanks for the tips Ellie. I think we will definitely try to get there early as you suggest.
Not sure if the taxi will be an option for us as there are 5 of us ... unless they have 7-seaters. Is the taxi fare expensive?
My concern around the shuttle is that there would be 3,000 passengers all fighting to get onto one or two shuttles ... does that tend to be the reality?
