We cancelled our original car hire for our next trip to Florida, paid a £25 admin fee and still saved a packet by switching to www.uscarhire.co.uk . Dollar have an on-airport location and are very convenient to pick-up from (we've used them for years).

We've been heaps of times through Dollar, Alamo and Hertz but it's allways the insurance that gives us the Sting. It cost us about £420 for this last trip. I know Car insurance is expensive and I must admit, I don't like this CDW only cover, so if I scratch it or total it, I want to walk away. But, there must be a compromise somewhere. What do most people pay for a two week hire including insurance ? Is there a cheaper way to go about this ?

You need to get car hire with all the insurances included upfront. OV car hire includes CDW, SLI and I believe something else too, aswell as all taxes. You will not find better value.
A word of warning dont ever attempt to cut down on insurance over here. The only exception being medical which MAY be covered on your travel policy.

Thanks for the info but Holiday Autos have quoted us £260 for 13 days hire fully inclusive from airport pickup which does seem competitive.

Have to agree with MTP on this, Airline Network for our 7 seater Mini Van in November/December were unbeatable (over £80 cheaper)
How much did this 7-seater actually cost you?

The other way to do this (re insurance) is to take out American Express premier plus travel insurance. This covers car-hire in the us, with all the cdw,sli etc etc, but not taxes. However i calculated that this is only cost effective if you have car hire for more than 16 days in a year and finding a uk based site that will sell you the car hire without all the other insurances. I only know of one place that will do this , and that is if you take a flight from them aswell.

    Hi all ,

Just checked airline network for the time I am going, 21-28 nov
and they are quoting £133 all in inclusive ( 2 door compact) ,whereas the company that have booked the flights for me have quoted £125 via holiday autos!
So its just a case of searching out the best deal...

    thanks ,

    Graham.

    Hi,

At the end of the day we're hiring for 18 days so it's even cheaper,

Airline Network Full Gold Package £492

US Car Hire Full Gold Package £616

    Giving a saving of £124

Or to look at it another way ........... $204 more to spend!
