I would advise you to ring Virgin anyway, they are really good and have made a note on our booking about mother in laws insulin requirements. She also has a letter from the doctor to say her meds need to stay in her hand baggage. As someone else said its a way of life and they deal with it all the time, it's either that or no one would fly

The problem with all this luggage/liquids issues is that there are all sorts of 'rules' from different sources and even then some are enforced and others often aren't.

I wouldn't be surprised if, when you call, Virgin quote THEIR rules but, as Blott correctly points out, it's more likely that the people charged with enforcing it will be airport security staff who have no affiliation to any particular airline and probably don't know their rules and apply an all embracing policy. To make it even more complex, my experience has been that some airports are much more likely to take a strict line with things than others. I too have found Manchester to be pretty flexible but at Heathrow (and to some extent at Gatwick) the jobsworths employed to check these things adopt a literal attitude to the point of obstinacy. On the whole, BAA airports staff seem to me to be the least flexible.

The only sure way is to stick to the rules (I don't fly Virgin so I'm not certain what theirs are) but you may well find that there is flexibility if you take a reasonable approach and have everything labelled with supporting documentation. No guaranteees though I'm afraid.

If you're going through Heathrow, I wish you the best of luck! I wish I had a pound for every time I've seen some poor soul rudely sent back to check-in after standing in a long queue at security. Resistance is useless!!

We always split the prescription medication between two hand luggage bags and the repeat prescription in my handbag. That way if one of the bags is mislayed we always have another supply. I would never put medication in the hold luggage.
