Can anyone advise as to whether it is okay to carry a HDD MEDIA STORAGE PLAYER, in a suitcase , in the hold, also what temperature is it in the hold, during the flight.

Personally, I'd never carry anything electronic/electrical or in the least bit valuable in a suitcase and always pack these in my cabin luggage. Remember that cases can't be locked and I don't want to tempt anyone! You also don't know if it's going to be buried under umpteen other cases, thrown around, etc whereas if you carry it with you, then you can take care of it yourself.

The certainly CAN be very strict if they're feeling that way out on the day. You're the only one who can decide whether you want to take the risk.

I'm not going to advise breaking the rules but usually the only way the airline knows the weight of carry-on is when passengers voluntarily hand it to them at check-in. No guarantees of course, but I flew over 100 times in the last year, almost all of which was with only carry-on lugggage. I can't recall a single instance when my bag was weighed at check-in and I'm certain it was never weighed either at security or on boarding.

We flew home in November with Virgin and they weighed all of our hand luggage. There was a 5 kgs limit and the lady made me take items out until it was the correct weight. They were imposing a strict one piece of hand luggage per person especially at Manchester airport as Cathy had to place her hand bag into one of the hand luggages. I am led to believe that this has now been increased to two pieces each.
We usually travel with United and they have never once weighed our hand luggage. In fact most of the American internal passengers tend to take all of their luggage on board with them.

According to Virgin Atlantic's website their hand luggage limit is 6kg. Not a massive difference really though!
