August Flights

Hi everyone,

As I am now tied completely to school holidays for one reason and another, and would like to go to florida for 3 weeks, my only option is summer hols. Having read the advice on here, I'm looking at the last 3 weeks in August in the hope that it will be slightly quieter. My problem is however, is that looking at flight prices for August, they are through the roof, do people really pay upwards of £800 for flights only (not even including car hire)? We are a family of 5 and this is completely out of out reach. Am I just not looking in the right place? When we went in March last year, the flights were approx £450ish each. Any help would be gratefully recieved as I can't bear the thought that we can't go back!

I've been looking at flights for August too, the best quotes I have found have been for approx £660 flying indirect - however my preferred airline is United and the flights are just over £700. Pretty much standard prices for August.

We paid £1800.00 to fly in the summer holidays direct through BMI. We are a family of four and although my eldest is 12 we had to pay the adult price for her.

If you're prepared to fly indirect the flight prices are cheaper.

Whenever the prices are as high as this we too fly indirect. If you are going for three weeks I don't think this is a problem. We flew US Airways from Gatwick into Charlotte and then took an internal flight. We landed in Orlando at 6pm which was only 3 hours later than an Virgin flight.

You will do well to find much cheaper flights for August.

Best I can find is through Expedia £649.00 per adult from Heathrow to Tampa, this is for Tuesday 5th to 26th, flying with Virgin and connecting in Washington, other weekdays are higher prices still.

We go every August and start looking on the web about Oct time. You do have to check as often as possible for special deals. We paid £486 per adult for 14th August this year, booked in Nov 2007, flying with BMI. Last year paid £530 ish with Virgin flying on 9th August. The deals are there but you have to work hard to find them.

My suggestion is to keep checking the GREAT DEALS thread at the bottom of VILLA GUESTS AREA. Guests and owners post up notice of cheap flights whenever we find them. Check it out and see.
One word of advice though is to not delay when you see a reasonable flight as they do go quickly, decide what you would be happy paying and book them as soon as you see them.

I booked our July-Aug and Oct flights back in Jan and was really pleased with the prices: Manchester to Tampa via Atlanta (Delta) for £480 including taxes for July/Aug and £370 incl taxes for Oct.

The last three weeks in august are a bit quieter as all the American schools have gone back to school by then. I only said yesterday I cannot wait for my daughter to finish school so we are not tied to going during the school hols. Just keep looking around for flights your sure to get a bargain in the end. [msnwink]

I completely agree. I think that you need to be realistic about prices at that time of year. The unfortunate fact is that you aren't going to find a dirt cheap price then, so set yourself a price you are willing to pay and, if it comes up, don't hang around - book it.

If you are prepared to take a risk and wait you may well get a cheaper flight from Virgin. I know last year they offered some lower priced flights around April/May time.
