    Gatwick hand baggage changes

Passengers transferring through London Gatwick will be able to carry two pieces of hand baggage through security from Monday, February 11.

For passengers departing from Gatwick, the one-bag allowance remains in place.

Good news for all those transfering through Gatwick, though it doesn't mention yet if it applies only to those going through the transfer unit, which wouldn't include those going onto domestic flights

Good news! How is a woman expected to manage with just one piece of hand luggage? [msnwink]

It does not appear to be clear to me. Am I missing something?

Sandra[/quote]Maybe... Following the 'liquids' alert in 2006, you've only been allowed to take one piece of hand luggage with you - if you take a handbag, you haven't been allowed anything else or if you take a rucksack, you can't take a separate handbag for instance.

Some of the rules were different if you travelled in another class apart from economy.

Now you can take a rucksack AND a handbag for instance, so you're allowed two pieces of hand luggage if you're transferring via Gatwick but not if your flight originates from there.

Make sure that you check this out with your airline as some still have the original restrictions in place.

Personally I found I did well without a handbag and some of the contents packed in my hand luggage although Mum felt completely lost without her handbag.

I now put a small hand bag in my rucksack with any essentials I need close to me on the plane. It works for me [msnsmile2]

We travel frequently so know about the liquids etc. I had read the post and was with someone else last night who told me you can now travel from Gatwick with 2 pieces of hand luggage. That was not how I had interpreted the post which is why I asked for clarification as when we left from Heathrow on 9th January, we were allowed 2 pieces of hand luggage. It had been made clear at that time, that Gatwick still did not have the correct facilities and would be some time before it was operational so I could not understand how it happened so quickly.

I think it is ridiculous that all airports did not start at the same time as it will cause chaos. We fly back from Orlando next week into Germany and will be allowed 2 pieces of hand luggage. When we get to Gatwick and have to catch an internal flight, we will only be allowed 1 piece as we have to clear customs etc. collect our luggage and then check in again with the local airline as we won't be 'in transit'.

Thank you for your explanation Blott but I think I just wanted to point out the confusion this may cause.

The problem is that Gatwick hasn't yet been approved to make the change because their security set up isn't as up to date as some others. I suppose this move is better than all the others having to wait until the last airport could make the move.

I agree, it is bewildering but no more than the complex situation that has been in place across the world for the last year or so. Being allowed 2 bags 1 way and 1 the other on US-UK flights makes absolutely no sense at all to me.

Personally I had got used to the 1 bag rule and packed accordingly. If you compare the time it takes to board an aircraft leaving or within the US where they haven't had the same restrcition with a UK departing flight with just 1 piece allowed, you'll soon be aware that the 1 bag rule had a lot to commend it.

I agree. I am always amazed at the size of some of the hand luggage taken on board US flights. Nothing makes me more annoyed than standing behind a queue of people waiting to get past a passenger who is trying to stow two huge bags in an overhead locker especially when it is above my seat and I know that my regulation size bag will have to be stowed some distance away.

I still don't understand why Gatwick has a problem introducing the 2 bags. I have seen that it is because of not having enough or the right kind of equipment but the change to a bag (the case size is now back to the full size of what was allowed previously ) +handbag or camera or laptop bag, is exactly what it was prior to the restrictions, and it was all being screened fine before then. We have never travelled in the last 10 years without every piece having to go through the scanner.
