    Best route to Scarborough

    Hi folks

we're off to Scarborough (caravan at Primrose valley) for easter and want to find the best route from west lothian just outside Edinburgh. googlemaps/multimap/aa and rac route planner all have different suggestions from using the M74 to york and crossing over or going down the A1 and using a mixture of A roads after that.

We'd rather get an idea from someone who may have used one or more of these routes. We are equidistant from the A1 and M74 so either would suit us from that point of view.

    Any views/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Elaine

no problem, although as it'll be at least a 5 hour trip for us then we'd rather avoid the scenery and go a more direct and quikcer route.

    Thanks

As a transport manager I would shoot a driver of ours if they went to the M74 from Edinburgh, A1 every time. If you were at say, Bathgate where we have vehicles based, I would suggest in a car, A68 onto the A1. Good drive but from memory a few speed cameras. If you are towing a caravan [gun] I would do the extra 30 miles and take the M74 for ease of driving.
    Regards, Mark

    Hi Mark

we stay in Armadale in fact. I have had a look at the A68 route you suggested but not sure how twisty the roads are (seems a daft question I know but my daughter and I are travel sick if the road has too many turns so try to take motorways where possible)?. If the M74 is only 30 miles extra would that still get us there at the same time since they have a higher speed limit?

    Thanks

    Elaine

    A1 without a doubt!

Then pick up the Scarborough/Filey signs.

Don't go to Scarborough though. You need to head for Filey as Primrose Valley is south of Filey as if you are heading towards Bridlington.

If you are staying in a static Caravan, turn in to the site on the first sign for Primrose Valley, if you are towing a caravan, the second gate is usually the best!

    Have a great time
