Remember last year Thomas Cook/Thomson had a couple of offer weekends where they were offering $2 to £1, anyone know if they may come up again this year?

It will depend on the exchange rate at the time, currently the commercial rate is 1.95 to the pound, it will need to be closer to the 2.00 on the commercial rate before they start to offer it on travel money.

Actually so did I, but I think the OP is referring to a currency exchange offer in the UK. Nobody will be getting anything close to $1.99 through that route today nor in fact through a Nationwide card.

Thomas Cook's rate for today is $1.88.

And getting a bit less on the exchange rate for the amount of cash you'd probably need is maybe a bit less critical than for your entire holiday budget.

If anyone has a Nationwide Flex account, they don't even need to exchange money prior to travel for spending money as these work in ATMs in the same manner - great rates and no charges.

I only ever take what I need for my immediate needs and , as I travel to the US very regularly, I always have a couple of hundred dollars in my wallet. I agree that taking large amounts of cash makes very little sense these days when everybody has debit and credit cards. I have a Flex account (and the N'wide credit card) and use it almost exclusively for my dollar needs in the US.

On the wider issue of exchange rates, as ever we can only guess where the next move will be. My own hunch is that the dollar will strengthen over the medium term but then I will admit that I have been wrong in the past.[msnwink]

For general d are fine but for shopping cash will usually get a better deal. Particularly in the independents. However carrying around a wad of cash is not ideal.
