Quick question.

I have someone in the office who has just booked a Florida flight and signed up to the Virgin Flying Club.

They are due points after they fly in June but are also looking at booking Vegas through Virgin using Miles Plus Money.

I remember in the past that I have seen, but can't find using the 'Search' function, that you may be able to use the miles you are going to get before taking the first qualifying flight.

I think someone said they rang Virgin to do this before and they were allowed to use miles that they were going to get, can someone confirm this?

Have not heard of that option myself but am sure if someone knows they will post. Why not phone Virgin Customer Service and ask them, as I would assume if you want to use miles plus money before you fly, you would need to book direct in any case. That way, you would hear it from the 'horses mouth' so to speak and revise your plans and finances as necessary.

We took a trip last year using miles + money. The miles were only deducted on the day we flew.

now i read just the other day that you cannot spend miles that are due, i think it was under the spending miles section or the rewards/companion flights on the VA website

they can buy additional miles if they need them but you obviously have to weigh up if it's worth it

the quickest way to find out is to ring flying club and they will have a quick yes or no, i strongly suspect the answer is no

the miles are deducted the day you fly Wilf but if you search online using miles plus money a message will come up if you do not have enough miles to book and pay for the flight

i was a few miles short for my last trip and i had to wait until my miles were there before i could spend them

I can't see them letting you do this because what would be to stop you cancelling the trip you say you are going to use the miles from? I may be wrong but I have always assumed you can only spend miles ones you have actually earned them,

You can't use miles before you fly, if you then didn't take the flights then the miles wouldn't be due.

There are exceptions to this, if you're a very frequent flyer, have a gold account and have more than one flight booked in the future then they may let you go slightly overdrawn but it's not the norm.

Thought that might be the case but I had an idea (wrongly) that if the fare is one of the non-flexible ones they may possibly let you use miles because you aren't getting a refund.

I'm going to 'lend' him 6000 of my miles so he can get the discount now and I will use some of his in return once he has banked some.

Unfortunately even though the ticket is non refundable and you didn't travel then you still wouldn't get the miles.

What you're doing sounds a good idea though - but you will have to book it for him as you can't transfer the miles although it sounds like you realise this already.

True, but some airlines will credit the miles you WOULD HAVE flown if your journey is aborted part-way through the itinerary but I've never heard of miles being awarded when there hasn't been any travel at all.
