And I'm with Andrew - horses for courses.
It's interesting how polarised opinions can be on this subject, but the clincher for us is the homeward leg - the dreaded overnight flight. Not managed Virgin UC, though, waiting to be without kids for that!
If you can why not I say. Hope you enjoy the flight. I think we would all love to fly this way if we could afford it. Enjoy. [msnsmile2]

To date, we have always flown economy but noticed a big difference in the attitude of the Virgin cabin crew on our last trip over in February. Might be time to consider one of the premium alternatives next time or another airline.
As if they don't charge enough for their seats, we have to start thinking about spending even more money and upgrade just to be treated better. [msnmad]

You have hit the nail on the head. I am convinced Virgin in particular have reduced "service" on economy seats deliberately. Premium economy is now what economy used to be and I just can't live with it any longer. I know lots of people feel it's extravagant to upgrade and you can put up with the lack of service for a few hours to save money, but for me, it's more than the cost. I just don't want to go through life treated like a number. While I can afford it, I will pay for the service (and the space). Doesn't mean I'm happy forking out the extra, but I will.

Agree totally with that sentiment, Tonish, as long as you are happy to pay the difference then it's fine.
If the Virgin service is getting poor is it worth trying another airline? We have only ever flown Virgin and we complained after our last flight because things were not working and the service was dire(air sick child, no sick bags, seat belt sign on and nobody came for 15 mins even though called several times) I thought it was a one off and the did give us 10000 virgin miles compensation which helped with flights this time! If the service is no better I'll try (economy) with someone else but who.....? maybe they are all the same!

Premium Economy is what Economy [u]should</u> be but Virgin seem to have convinced the travelling public that it's something special which it very clearly isn't.
I have travelled both PE and economy and the service is exactly the same (apart from the pre flight drink and larger seats). Where they have better service is Upper Class, but I would never be able to afford that unless I raided the nearest bank!!!
If I was to choose between BA and Virgin Economy I would say BA has the edge in the long haul. Personal choice really. If you are after a bigger seat that is reasonable cost you have to start looking at the Charter flights. I have found them to be good value for money and affords you a few extra comforts. Quick check in, larger seats, first off plane etc for around £100 more each way.
On the last flight we took with Thomas cook Premium service I was very impressed and the seat was actually £75 cheaper than a Virgin Economy seat.
