Yes, they will work with no problems in the UK. By the time you have paid import duty when you bring it back there is probably no saving over buying it in the UK though.
Full details of them are on Apple's website at http://www.apple.com/uk/ipodtouch/ - basically it's an iPod, so can play music and videos. It also has wi-fi so you can surf the net at any wifi hotspot or at home.
My husband bought a 16 gig one in Seattle a couple of months ago. No problem using it in the UK and Apple's warranty is international unlike most others. It's great fun, easy to use and works well over our wireless network at home.
We're going to a villa in Orlando next summer with wireless broadband so we'll take it with us to check up on opening times etc (might even use it to post on here!) We were going to fly BA and use it to check in online but now we're going with Virgin instead that won't be necessary as we'll use their Downtown Disney check in, but it would have been worth its weight in gold for that alone!
