This story is 14 months old Alastair!

It was predicted after this summer time period that the current rules would relax a little more.

Mmmmm, it's still only a prediction though, hope it is soon.

They have been predicting this on a weekly basis for the past year and more!

The effect on Virgin and BA in particular has been huge. The Frequent Flyer forums are full of posts telling people to avoid passing through UK if there is an other way of getting to your destination in Europe.

I was transferring to an international flight through Gatwick (reluctantly) on Saturday and watched a teenage girl being brought to tears by the insensitivity of the Jobsworth on the security line. She had taken her handbag out of her carry-on to get her boarding pass out which meant she technically had 2 bags.

    Welcome to the UK madam!!

I was given to understand that the rules relaxed on 1st November 2007 for restricted hand luggage. My husband travelled back from Orlando International on that day and took 2 hand luggage items (but made sure he could tranfer into 1) and he was not challenged?????

Travelling back from the USA(or any other country for that matter) to UK is not the problem as you can have 2 items.

It is leaving UK, or when you arrive in UK and are using another flight to transfer to Europe or another airport in UK.

It is only at UK security that you have the problem of only 1 bag allowed. Once through security you can take a handbag or laptop case out of your carry on and board the aircraft with 2 items.
