You can certainly use them to get cash at an ATM, but none of mine have ever worked for actually making a purchase.

My debit cards Nationwide and Citibank have worked for both ATMs and purchases every time.

I've also had some problems with debit card purchases. I've found that when the till machine asks whether I'm using a credit or debit card, if I select credit card (even though it's actually a debit card) it works.

No cause for alarm, but you might find that a lot of transactions in the US require a credit card and cash is almost actively discouraged in places. Others on here will have a better idea that I do, but I think car hire companies insist on one before releasing the vehicles.

I've got a Nationwide debit card and I've tried to use it many times for purchases with no success. Thanks for the tip Katys Grandad. I'll try that next time.

My husband only has a Nationwide debit card. This is what he always uses, nut like others have said when the machine asks you to choses between Debit and credit card you have to choose credit.
Never had a problem with it, and have used it as the security on hire cars.
