    UK car hire

I don't know if anyone can help but we are having a transport problem for our next trip in March. We have to get 3 adults and 3 children in car seats from Bristol to Gatwick. We only have a focus as our family car and cannot fit mother-in-law in let alone her luggage. She doesn't want to drive herself and the suggestion that she has to limit her shopping and only bring 1 case has not gone down well! Also with the new baby we have to take buggy, carseat, nappies ect with us.
We usually hire a car for the trip and last time got Zafira and it was a squeeze and that was without the baby. We are struggling to find a hire company that hires big cars, can anyone suggest anyone to try or suggest any other solutions.

why not use the local taxi or airport service. Might be worth looking at trains as I think they go straight into gatwick.

If you email me with your exact requirements to info@uscarhire.co.uk (dates, times, location) then I can see what we can do for you. We can often secure a Galaxy size car which is bigger than the Zafira. The only risk is that we can not 100% guarantee the Galaxy size, so if the supplier ended up giving you a Zafira size on the day then there would be no come-back.

You could go by train, but I think would have to change at Reading. If you get a family railcard, there are some good fares (from around £75 rtn)Maybe you could contact a local mini bus company

Thanks for your suggestions guys and for your offer of help Roger. However we can't take the risk of not getting the bigger car on the day. At the moment we are looking at the train or national express options as this seems the only solution at present. We investigated taxi transfers and it was hundreds of pounds and the big cars we have found to hire have been hugely expensive. Rest assured though we will be hiring our US car through Roger [clap]

Have you considered getting two slightly smaller vehicles? That was you could be sure of extra space.
This would be much less inconvenient than getting on a train or coach. We have recently had to hire a car locally for a couple of days and secured a brand new Picasso for £42 a day, although we did opt to pay more for extra insurance so there was no excess. I doubt whether you could get rail tickets for less than that. Why not look to see what Roger can do for you?

depending on luggage you could get 3 adults and 3 children in a zafira, we have a zafira and there is an option of putting only one 3rd row seat up and the luggage could go next to this

my two children rarely travel together in the same row and coming back from holiday in the summer we had us in the front, 3 seats available in the middle (occupied with my terrible teen and granny) and then my yongest in the rear with the suitcases (3 of them)

it could work getting to the airport but i cannot see it working coming home as you're sure to have more bags

another alternative is to ask extended family if they would drive their car as the 2nd vehicle and you could offer to cover fuel costs and bring them a nice presie home, it might be worth asking?
