Hi Mary
JFK is huge with many different terminals. As a first step, it would be a good idea to find out which airline/terminal you're flying from. Your airline might have its own lounge and many offer day passes.
I'm lucky in that I have access to lounges because I fly a lot. In my experience, US lounges tend to be specific to the airlines and I'm not sure if the concept of public 'pay for entry' lounges is that common over there. I know there is something called Priority Pass that gives access to different lounges but that's really an annual membership arrangement and quite pricey.
There are plenty of websites on JFK that should be able to answer the question.
We used air miles to Fly Upper Class from JFK with Virgin. The lounge was very nice. There were a few next to each other and as Phil says they were airline specific.

We have not tried it ourselves but this is the link for the Priority Pass

It does seem a bit pricey if you were only to use it a couple of times a year but on the plus side there are complimentary refreshments and snacks, email/internet facilities and a far more comfortable and relaxing environment if you are spending a few hours in the airport.
