Never heard of this before. I presume it is a 16th birthday?? Is it for a girl? If so, what about perfume. [msnsmile2]

tap into google, lots of info, heres a snippet

    quote
A sweet sixteen is a traditional birthday party for girls to have when they turn sixteen years old. In parts of the United States and Canada, sixteen is the age at which one may obtain a driver's license. It is also the age of consent in many states, hence it is viewed by many adolescents as an important milestone. It is the American counterpart of the Spanish and Latin American tradition of a Quinceañera, with both parties having the same sense but in Spanish-speaking countries it is at the 15th birthday.

i bought both of my teenage neices a wish pearl for their last birthdays, you had to open the pearl and the colour signified the wish

they where not expensive and both of the girls loved them

What a charming tradition. I wonder how long before it crosses the Atlantic like bridal and baby showers or trick or treat!

Perhaps as Liesa says some Internet research will reveal what is the norm at these things. I expect someone will have had experience of this and get back to you here though.

Regarding a present a keepsake of some sort would probably be appreciated. Is there something typically Scottish you could give?

Do let us know what it was like when you return (if your son tells you!).

There is a program on MTV that is like a reality programm following the build up to and the actual sweet sixteen birthday party, all the tears tantrums etc. They are now doing it on the UK MTV, a friend of mine's Daughter has been chosen to have her party filmed, MTV pick up the costs for everything, from party location hire, to limousines for all the guests, food, outfits, they even have a £10,000 budget for a suprise celebrity guest to suprise the birthday girl/boy!!

I wonder if they would do a sweet 40 for me next year??
