Single Hand Luggage Restriction to be Lifted?

    From travelmole.com

    <blockquote id="quote" class="ffs">quote:
Rules limiting air passengers to a single piece of hand luggage may be lifted - but not until after the summer peak travel period.

Aviation minister Jim Fitzpatrick is quoted by the Financial Times as saying that security rules imposed at UK airports following last summer's terrorism alert could be soon relaxed. It is thought this could be by November.

Passengers are likely to be able to take two pieces of hand luggage onto aircraft, although a ban on carrying liquids will remain, the FT reported.

The minister reportedly said prior to a tour of Heathrow tomorrow (Thursday) to discuss the airport's delays: "If they can get the throughput without reducing the levels of safety and security, then we'll lift the one-bag rule without any problem, providing we're convinced and they're convinced."

About time as this is a stupid rule especially as it only applies here. I flew out to America and had to put my handbag in my carryon suitcase so I had my handbag available as soon as we landed. Coming home from America I got on the plane with my hanbag not packed in my carryon suitcase ie had 2 pieces of hand luggage.

The liquids rule is equally daft and insisting all bottles etc are in a clear plastic bag does not make me feel any more secure.

Can't wait for that I hate not having a handbag and a carryone and trying to stuff everything into one bag, especially when I am carrying my laptop as I still have to think about camera and all my knick knacks I carry in my handbag which I would not want in the hold.

Although I have become very disciplined these days with what I take. I fly at least three return journies a month and I hate the way the staff speak to you when you say you have no you really have no liquids including cosmetics etc, in the end I just tell them nicely I am a frequent flyer and understand all the rules as some of them are really patronising, although I do understand the safety aspect of course.

when we flew end of june it was a mad last minute dash which resulted in my husband putting a bottle of new hugo boss in his hand luggage , think it was 100mls . it was in the bag with phone chargers , psp etc. well the girl at virgin said you will have to dump that, being a tight git he said to me i 'll put it back in and if they take it off me too bad. this bag went through the x-ray and we were called over , probably because of all the wires. they looked inside took the aftershave out , then promptly put in back in ! so i don' t get it at all

If it was 100 ml, that's one person's liquid allowance in their hand luggage anyway, although it should have been in a clear, sealable polybag so he was lucky!

Have to say, it was a bit of a joy not to have a handbag when we last travelled and to not have to juggle with two pieces of hand luggage.

I managed to fit everything of importance, tickets, keys, passports, driving licence, pen for filling in forms, money, etc, etc into a zip up compartment on the outside of my hand luggage.

Just had to remember to take anything necessary out before we had the hand luggage put into the overhead bins as I physically can't get to it. Stuff I did take out fitted into the seat pocket (just had to remember to put it back into hand luggage before we left the plane!) and overall it was fine.

Mum, however, was like a lost soul with no handbag and couldn't figure out what to do with her hands and arms for the entire journey! But, if they bring back handbags being allowed, I might even do without one.

The 100mls is per container which to me seems a bit stupid because you can't have a half empty 200ml container but you can have 2 100ml ones which are both full.

I have got into the habit of just making sure there is room in my hand luggage for my handbag to go in and then if there ar eanythings I need on the plane I can get to them easily. Mind you if it's relaxed by December when we go at least we might be able to bring some of the fragile ornaments through which I woudnt have got in my bag before.

I really like the one piece of hand luggage only rule - It means there is room for everyones luggage in the overhead lockers on the plane. I don't feel that i need to rush to get to my seat so that I can put my handluggage somewhere. with the old rules there were always the people that filled everyones overhead lockers with no consideration for anyone else.

Last trip I did the same as Steph and put a small handbag in our large hand luggage rucksack that also held my camera bag. Just enough room inside it to hold a lipstick and hand cream I had in the clear plastic bag, plus my purse, glasses and pen.

But does the one piece achievethat object?

My wife and duaghter used to have a small carry-on bag and a handbag.

Now they have a larger carry-on in which they place their handbag. Once through security they take out handbag.

So larger carry-on plus handbag is the result.

Similarly I have my laptop bag in my carry-on for security, and remove it later.

Even under the old rules(and those current in the rest of the world)there were restrictions on what you can carry on anyway.

My husband flies home every weekend plus he often has to make other flights during the week. He has to carry a lap top etc and has found the no toiletries rule particularly inconvenient as he travels with handbaggage only. At least now you can buy mini size toiletries in Boots etc here, you used to be only able to get them in the States.

I know what you mean about the attitude of the staff but I do have some sympathy when you see the number of bottles of water etc that people still try to carry through!

It also seems rather unfair that women were allowed a carry on bag plus handbag, while men were restricted to a carry on. Those men brave enough (Italians ? ) to have a handbag too did seem to get away with it though!
