VS027 is only cancelled on certain days in September. We are travelling on 24th on it and have only just booked. Their web site gives the days it is cancelled for.

here is the original newspaper item i found

Have mickey mouse and all his pals from the sunshine state really lost their old pulling power?when the pound broke through the the two dollar barrier earlier this year,it was widely expected that bookings to the US would soar as both package hoilday prices and the cost of living would fall. Curiously, it hasn't worked out that way. Florida is expected to attract around 1.5 million UK visitors in 07, barely ahead of the 2006 total. Thomson has announced it will s[bad language filtered out] its winter flying programme into Florida and freeze capacity there next year, pointing out that 200,000 homes reckoned to be owned by the British in the Sunshine state have pushed the travel market there largely into the seat-only sector. Travel Trade Gazette says virgin is cancelling 26 flights from Gatwick and Manchester to Orlando in september. Florida tourist officials fear that fuel surcharges, which can add almost £350 to the cost of a family holiday, are partly to blame. XL Leisure Group managing director Geoff Mdehurst says tighter passport restrictions in the States mean many more Americans have decided to take their holidays at home. And with equally tight customs restrictions for incoming visitors, he fears that Brits no longer see the States as an aspirational holiday choice.

This is the third year in succession that VA have cancelled some of their September flights - all down to demand although I don't understand why they automatically schedule them in the first place.

If I remember correctly a similar statement was issued for late Jan/early Feb departures this year too.

I think it's all down to supply and demand, they apply for the slots so that if they are busy then they can run both flights but if demand is low then they can consolidate the flights which makes sense as far as fuel/energy global warming etc. If they only put on one flight and found they could sell more than that then it would be too late to apply for an extra slot. It's ok as long as they are still going on the same day provided they make sure they notify the passengers well in advance imo.
It also gives a bit of leeway if weather causes disruption as if a flight is cancelled one day then they will have another slot to take the backlog.
