    Tipping

Hi, could anyone please advise me on the rules of tipping, we have been a few times, last time we went to Tony Romas they automatically put the tip on the bill and it was quite high, so
    1. If it is already on the bill do you have to pay it?
    2. If we are not happy about the service are we within our rights to not tip at all? Thanks

Tipping should be 10% for ordinary service, 15% for good service and 20% for excellent. If it is added to the bill you can ask for it to be removed.
I would only not tip in poor service situations but I would always explain why, infact I would usually just leave a dollar as it makes more of a point. if yo leave nothing they may simply think you are tight[msnwink]

Thanks for the replies, the only bad meal we had was at Tony Romas at Buena Vista, (which normally is very good) and after complaining to the manager, quietly i might add, he was very apologetic and gave us the whole meal for free, i have not never tipped but getting the balance right is important because i know they do not earn much. First time posting question on here (slightly apprehensive) but so glad i did, brilliant site, look on almost everyday. Thanks again.

I think it is the Brits who start at 10%. All our US friends start at 15% and go upwards dependant on service. We personally give 15% but if the service is bad, then no way, and we leave one or two dollars only. This does not happen too much as usually we have good service - even if the food isn't good!!

we found that we always left at least 15% and more often that not nearer to 20%

the only prob i had is when a take away was delivered (we had 10% tip waiting which we thought was the norm) the driver looked at it and then pretty much demanded 15% as a service charge

Because of the reputation us Brits have got we now pretty much start at 15% for decent and 20% for better than that. If the food is poor I would expect that to be reflected in my food bill-so would not "penalise" the server because of the quality of the food-only their service

Here are my rules for tipping:

People want to make sure they don't do something foolish and extravagantly over tip, but they also don't want to not tip and look like they don't know what they're doing.

Maybe the only spending area for which most people know the tipping rule is dining out, where a gratuity of 15 percent to 20 percent is customary.

In fact, 18.9 percent is the average amount tipped in American restaurants, according to a recent study by leisure-information provider Zagat Survey LLC. Philadelphia and Orlando were the best tippers, at an average of 19.4 percent, while Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu were the worst, at closer to 18 percent.

But tipping is a murkier issue with other service providers.

Everyone from the maid to the person delivering your Take Out Pizza might expect a tip during your holiday, while every lunch counter and coffee shop seems to have a tip jar beside the cash register.

To help relieve your tip-spending anxiety, here are a few questions and answers about tips:

Whom should I tip while on holiday?

Consider the quality and frequency of the service, your relationship with the person and how thankful you are for this person's service.

How much should I tip if I'm uncertain?

In many situations, using the wait staff rule of tipping 15 percent to 20 percent will mean you won't look like a cheapskate. It works for hairdressers, other services and taxi drivers.

"If you're not sure what else to do, think about something in the neighbourhood of 15 percent.

Which line of the bill is used to calculate a tip?

Technically, you should calculate the tip on the pre-tax amount, rather than the bill total. But it won't make much difference unless it's a huge bill. If you're using a coupon or gift certificate, tip on the price before the discount.

How can I quickly calculate what the tip should be?

If you're going for 20 percent, look at the pre-tax total. Move the decimal point to the left and double that amount. A bill of $42.30 becomes $4.23, then $8.46.

But you don't get extra credit for being precise, so you could just double the first digit on bills of less than $100 and be close enough. For bills of more than $100, double the amount represented by the first two digits. So, a bill of $162.71 becomes double $16, or $32.

What if I have no small dollar bills on hand for a tip?

Faced with an on-the-spot gratuity situation and a wallet full of $20 bills, you can ask the service person to get change for you or make change from his or her own tips.

It's awkward but you say, 'Hey, do you have any change? All I have are twenties and I'd love to give you a tip; a little self-effacing honesty probably goes a long way, as opposed to not tipping him or her, which leaves everybody feeling really weird.

    Should I tip 60 cents -- 15% -- on a $4 beer?

Generally, think "paper, not coins" when tipping. Tip the barkeep or cocktail waitress a buck a drink. That is, unless you run a tab and order food too. Then revert to the usual 15 percent to 20 percent of the bill.

How much tip for the pizza delivery guy?

Tip food-delivery people 15 percent of the bill, or $2, whichever is higher.

    Hope this helps..[msnsmile2]

We had this happen so i never gave him anything. Next time he was more than grateful for a couple of dollars.
