Phones in the US

To all considering using UK phones here. They work fine, but the bill you'll get will be a little costly.
When you arrive go to any large store, like Best Buy or Circuit City and but a 'pay as you go' cel phone. I think Virgin sell theirs here. Probably wont work when you get back to the UK, but it'll be there for your trips here.

I have to agree you with you here, we have used our mobile whilst in US and we did get a large bill. We have purchased a cheep cell phone from wallmart and bought a phone card for around $20.00 to $30.00, we now have this in our villa and use it when we go out on hols.

We find it handy when we go out shopping, to ring the villa and tell them to put the kettle on when we are on our way back. Its just handy to have.

We bought the Virgin mobile 2 years ago we top it up every 90 days $20 via paypal brilliant Idea we also use to take out shopping etc to contact the villa have found it very useful.

Remember your mobile MUST be Tri or Quad band or they will NOT work in the USA.

As Sharon, we have a USA Virgin Mobile and at the price they are, you can almost use them as disposable phones!


We top ours up using PayPal at $15 every 90 days or wait until we go over if we are travelling before the credit expires!

i have just bought 2 motorolas from wallmart for $18.95 each its basic but u get $10 dollars credit i regitered the phones then took the sims out it works in my phone nokia n95 but as prev stated u need tri or quad band the calls are charged at 25c per min when i phone the other sim or vise versa we both get charged 25c per call it is with cingular hope this helps
