St. George's Day is celebrated by several nations of whom Saint George is the patron saint, including Georgia, Bulgaria, Portugal, England, Catalonia and the Gora. For England, St. George's Day also marks its National Day. Most countries who observe St. George's Day celebrate it on 23 April, the traditionally accepted date of Saint George's death in 303. For those Eastern Orthodox Churches that follow the Julian Calendar, 23 April and 25 December are main holidays for St. George, according to the Gregorian Calendar. The country of Georgia celebrates it on 23 November.
The Scout movement has been celebrating St. George's Day on 23 April since its first years.
In 1969, Saint George's feast day was reduced to an optional memorial in the Roman Catholic calendar, and the solemnity of his commemoration depends purely on local observance. He is, however, still honoured as a saint of major importance by Eastern Orthodoxy. His feast date remains the second most important National Feast in Catalonia. There, it is known in Catalan as Diada de Sant Jordi and it is traditional to give a rose and a book to a loved one. This tradition inspired UNESCO to declare this the International Day of the Book, since 23 April 1616 was also the date of both the birth and death of the English playwright William Shakespeare (according to the Julian calendar) and the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes (according to the Gregorian calendar).[msnsmile2]

There was a long procession of Scouts, cubs, beavers, guides and brownies in the town, with the Mayor and the local MP Geoffrey Cox. The local Stannary Band led the procession. It was a beautiful day and the Town Crier did his Oyez, Oyez., and everyone filed into the Church. It was wonderful to see so many children taking part, and also how great that these Leaders give their time to teach the children good values.

We have a pub and restaurant, and used to celebrate St. George's Day and decorate with flags etc. and special menu's. It has all gone by the board now and no one does it any more, including us.[msnsad]

And Crotia Julie, there is a big statue of him and the dragon in Zagreb, when I was there the English guys showed their respect by climbing up on it, and then wondered why I gave them a hard time.[msnscared]

I can't understand why you guys don't celebrate St Georges day more. I am as patriotic as they come and always do something to mark St Andrews Day...normally put up my Xmas tree...joking aside, I think it is sad to see that more folks celebrate St Patricks Day than there own heritage.

I consider myself quietly patriotic, I LIVE and work in England. Unlike so many other nationalities who are SO patriotic about a country they left or barely see? Curious that one?
