Thanksgiving Info for a Brit

My trip next year involves Thanksgiving (25th November if I'm correct). I was coming back on the actual day but extended my vacation to 3 weeks [8D].
I now see some people referring to it as 'Thanksgiving week'.
Being a Brit and not knowing much about it I thought it may be busy on the 25th but then revert back to normal.

Is this not the case?
And what is classed as 'Thanksgiving week', the week after or before the actual day?

Thanksgiving is very much like our Christmas....the roads are busy a few days before with people going home...a lot of the shops are closed for a few days over the weekend...not so much now as they use too be I'm told....its a very big holiday here.....I'm sure the Americans here can tell you more about it.....

The day after Thanksgiving though they have some amazing sale bargains and many of the stores open at 6 am so you need to get up early to catch them. Pick up the local paper or keep an eye out in the stores for leaflets giving details.

Well, having been in Florida during Thanksgiving, you need to be aware that it's really quiet in the home communities and also on the roads.

We also discovered that lots of restaurants, shops, etc weren't going to be open but that Perkins was one of the few that was so, when you visit restaurants during the rest of your holiday, ask if they will be open on Thanksgiving Day so that you have a good idea of where you can eat out. I hope you like turkey as it's on practically every menu in the weeks running up to Thanksgiving!

The theme parks are likely to be busy on that day (no-one's at work!) so it would be good if you could avoid them on that day.

The day after Thanksgiving is like a mad house in the shops as the sales start at ridiculous times like 6 am and there are queues/lines to get in and snap up bargains (it's great for Christmas shopping you can bring back with you). So much so that, by the time we got to one store at about 11 am, there were two police vehicles in the car park trying to sort out the traffic jam! I would think that would be a good day to avoid shopping if you can unless you're desperate for bargains...

So the busiest days in Thanksgiving Week are just 2 days?
The actual day and the day after?

It is a short holiday in the States so most people take a 4 day vacation,drive. Not a real busy time like Xmas holiday. I am sure most of the nicer resturaunts are offering a special Thanksgiving dinner for lunch also.
