What you actually said was a great exchange rate and a 2.75% charge which is incorrect.
<blockquote id="quote" class="ffs">quote:Originally posted by blott
If you have time before you go, the best thing is to get a Nationwide credit card which gives you a great exchange rate and also doesn't charge up to 2.75% on your purchases.
Paul, what I said is above and I'm sure everyone can spot the difference between your statement and mine.

Now, I'm happy with my Nationwide card and I know you're happy with your card so let's leave Grangrad to make up his own mind.

Just to get back on topic a wee bit, I think the summary is:

Don't take Stirling (£ / GBP) in any form;
If you are going to use plastic make sure you are aware of the costs/perks involved - your card issuer will be able to advise you of these;
If using travellers cheques, get US$ travellers cheques.

And just for my tuppenceworth

It may be advisable to use a mix of currency forms (some actual US$ and rest in US$ travellers cheques (30/70 split ??) or even a pre-pay visa type cash card (a bit like a pre-loaded debit card));
Don't carry all your eggs in one basket - split your funds between your group going out (those that you are confident can carry money safely);
Don't get involved in day trading - if you are happy with the currency rate exchange the money, you may win and you may lose, but you need to get it sorted;
You're best exchange rate will probably not be what can be secured at the airport - recommended sources for tourist travel probably include the Post Office and M&S.

Otherwise please feel free to join in the other ongoing conversation[msnwink]!

If you're thinking of just taking a 30/70 spilt of dollars & TC's then we always use Travelex online as they give you a better rate of exchange than any high street branch (even their own chain). If you buy online you can then collect them from your nearest Travelex branch the next day. Your exchange rate is fixed at the time you purchae your dollars.

If you are going to buy a load all at once then my advice would be to check out these sites below and then email Travelex on their price promise deal and they will refund you the difference if anyone else offers a better rate of exchange.

We have used Travelex all the time and find them to be the best. Also you get BA miles with Travelex.
