we went through Gatwick in Feb and I carried my handbacg and travel bag at the same time. No one questioned it, but I had room to pack it in just in case.
I guess it depends who is working when you go through!

I've been through security at 7 different UK airports over the last few weeks and have found that the London airports apply the rules very strictly (Heathrow is a nightmare which I now avoid at all costs).
I usually fly from Manchester where the rules seem to be different every time I go through.
When I flew out from Gatwick last month the one piece luggage rule was being strictly enforced by BAA along with tannoy announcements so I definitely would adhere to this policy.
Leaving MCO last week the same policy was in force.
However, on both occasions once I had been through security I removed my handbag from my holdall and had no problems at all.

The policy in the USA(and most of the world for that matter) is not the same as UK. You can take a normal size carry-on suitcase(same as UK) Plus a handbag, computer bag etc
