navman satnav

I have just been given a navman satnav and have been told that i can upgrade it for U.S.
Does anyone use one of these and if so, how did they upgrade to U.S.

Please make answers non-technical for this pensioner.

I had to buy the maps from navman-load them via cd onto my compooter and then store them on a memory chip that i also had to buy.
If you are going regularly then it is worthwhile but if your trip is a one off i'd check out this site and hire one
