This young couple visited us every day last week. They are Sandhill Cranes. They mate for life and we saw them do their ritual mating dance where they throw a little sand up in the air, jump as high as they can then flutter down. There was such an abundance of wild birds at the back of the villa that we went out and bought a book to identify them. Great stuff!
When we stayed at Westridge we saw these as we walked round the estate. The funniest thing was when we saw them chase a gate.

When we stayed at Regal Palms we had 2 waiting for us every morning doing a little dance.
They're great aren't they? Just remember never to feed them as it's illegal because they're an endangered species.

We always see them in 3's or 4's at High Grove when we are there. Lots of people feed them. Some will take food from you hand didn't realise they were endangered!

We tell all our guests not to feed them (we don't feed them obviously!) and you can be reported to the Wildlife Commission and get a hefty fine for feeding them.
When you think about it, they're supposed to live on insects, etc so giving them great lumps of bread has to be very bad for them as it's not part of their natural diet. They're wild and not meant to be tamed to take food from humans. No wonder they're endangered!

We saw a pair every day when we were at Indian Ridge - what a racket they made early morning!! It was so loud we thought they were in the villa with us!
