BT tells all it's customers they have an 8MB line, however the small print at the bottom says and I paraphrase here, "If you have a c*** line or anything else wrong or are to far from the exchange then you may get less" They will only normally come out if you are getting less than 2MB.

Your result says that you are getting a download speed of 4.5MB which is just over half the rated speed. Your upload speed is set on all these types of line to .5MB which is what your are getting (448Kbps).

If your line speed goes up and down at different times of the day then you may have a problem with high line load from other users on your segment of the network. If it stays the same all the time then it's down to the line. Also remember that it was half term in a lot of places last week. Now if you have a lot of children on line playing shooting games in your segment than that could be the cause of the slow down. Do another speed test after midnight and see what you get then.

I am with BT switched about 6 months ago from Orange
Was going to go with Carphone Warehouse changed my mind. The beginning was a nightmare I was constantly phoning the helpline. I complained to customer services I couldn't understand the operator.I was given a number in the UK the problem was resolved eventually the router was faulty
Touch wood been ok since, even so not as fast as orange but I had so many emails bounce back or returned with Orange I had to find an alternative

Well, we went to London, the weekend, they phoned us there!! Asked what speed the computer was showing AGAIN!! After we had told them we wasn't at home!! They phoned when we were driving home, told them to ring back a bit later, guess what! They phoned Monday morning at 6.15!! And didn't understand, we didn't want to talk to them!! They are supposed to be phoneing back later tonight. But touch wood, the internet seems back to normal, just hope it stays this way, too much time is wasted trying to talk to those guys!![msnmad]

We have been with Virgin Net for many years now. The are not the cheapest but so far we have never had a problem with the service. We did have major problems when we first upgraded to Broadband in that BT cut our phone line off by mistake instead of switching the broadband service on. Took us almost 5 days to get the phone line back on and BT wanted to charge us another £50 activation fee to get the broadband up and runing. Our BT phone line in our holiday home went off last year and it took BT 3 weeks to get it back up and running. I must have called them 20 times in this period and their customer service has to be the worst i have ever come across.

Talk Talk is driving me MAD [msnmad]

I can use it early morning.

It slows up at 12:00 and after 15:00 hrs I cannot access my e-mails webmail box or Outlook express. It sends out okay.

I open it up at about 7am and the in box contains mail from 15:00 the previous day

    Any help appreciated.

Phoning "out of the country " has proved unhelpful.

Same problem with the emails on TalkTalk Linda. I have emailed them requesting my MAC so i can go elsewhere although i expect them to come back with some early termination charge. This i will of course dispute as they have failed in their contract with me to supply a service that is fit for function. If they still want to try and charge me i am sure i am protected under one of the consumer laws regarding Sale of Goods or Sale of Services.

We had major problems with TalkTalk resulting with no phone or Internet for a 3 weeks period from the middle of December.

To say the least they are unhelpful, unable to communiate between departments and if they don't want to speak to you just put the phone down.
In the end I went to OfTel and they gave me the number for High Level Complaints at TalkTalk.
When you ring HighLevel complaints it is actually a call messaging service and someone will get back to you within 5 days. The person allocated to our case phoned us once and then once it had been partially resolved.
We are still having problems with our Internet and we just now go through to 2nd level complaints at Broadband.
We are still waiting for a response from them to our complaint letter and looking to move as soon as we can but after reading the above none of the companies seem to be that good.
