New Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station

Got this yesterday at the Apple Store (2-3 week wait online) its excellent!!! Much better than the last one.............

The sleek, easy-to-use AirPort Extreme Base Station is the perfect wireless access point for home, school, or small business. Blazing fast, it delivers up to 2.5 times the performance and up to twice the range compared to 802.11g routers.1 And you can use it with both Macs and PCs.

Sad thing is we left the store with yet another 30g iPod Video for our youngest with a pink case[msnwink]

The basestation is 'capped' in the UK not to use the additional 5MHz frequencies that can be used in the USA, so the speed may not be maximal. We will bring one back from the USA to try out.
The US version can work simultaneously on the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands to double up the speed

    Yes, but...
It's 'capped' only via the software - not the hardware or firmware. We are able to configure it manually in the new Airport Admin Program that comes with the new AEBS. This software also boosts the existing 802.11b/g Wireless card to 802.11n on our Core 2 Duo iMac. On its own this boosts traffic to 130 mbps.

Then, in the Manual Settings, there is a feature where you configure the Base station to your Time Zone - and if one was to mistakenly input US/Central, for example, one then has the 5ghz option, right there in the list.
We don't of course, as we are based in the UK. Naturally.
It's all pretty academic anyway as unless all of your equipment is g or n or 5ghz it's restricted to the slowest common denominator.[msnwink]

Where it comes into its own is the USB2 connected hard drive which we can now access on all the computers in the house. This was the real reason we bought it to replace our existing Airport Extreme Base Station. Chris has set up the Windows PCs to use the Disk Utility which is great. I can save files/documents to a central hard drive directly from my "Work" PC, without having duplicate copies on all of our 12 networked Macs as well.[msnsmile2]

Hubby's got a Porsche 911 in the garage and he always winks at me when someone points out that the speed limit's 70.[msnwink][msnwink][msnwink][msnwink][msnwink]

P.S I didn't have any help with this post either[msnwink][msnwink][msnwink]

    Very good Julie

Nice work around. I thought they would have disabled that properly

PS I have a Buffalo Linkstation as a network storage device attached to an airport express in the dining room. I agree with you that networked drives work a treat

We received ours on Thursday. This our first Apple router and is the best. I gave up on the last 2 as we would have to recycle the power at least twice a day or more to keep them working Have not had to do once with the Apple.

The wireless routers from Apple are as reliable as their computers Kay. We have used the same airport basestation for years, hardly ever restarting the unit
Why not try a MacBook for your next laptop and experience the same reliability on a computer?
