Mrs Babypowder I dm'd you.Did you get it?
mfairhurst - I think I can answer your question about Fl / US drivers license.
I took my test in 1998, got a 5 year license, its different now. There is a computer test which is multiple choice questions, all of which are contained in the Fl Drivers Handbook which is obtainable free from the DMV office on OBT. Its simple as long as you have a reasonable memory. Then there is a 5 minute drive around a car park to establish your competence as a driver. Also easy to pass. Frankly you would have to be stupid to fail any part of it, its not like the UK test.
Since 911 the rules about a drivers license for non us citizens have changed. Basically all it means for a UK citizen on a visa waiver is that the license will arrive by post from Tallahassee the state capital a couple of weeks after you apply, you will be given a paper temporary license meanwhile to produce to the police should you need to.
The length of validity of the license will be as long as the immigration office gave you to stay in the USA. Yes, only 3 months on a visa waiver. And a renewal will be $15 plus a $1 late fee if your old license expired a few months before.
You should get a Fl license if you ever want insurance, it will be a lot cheaper the longer you have held the license.
I use Geico.com for insurance , they are friendly and cheap, you can do it mostly on line, they don't care if you don't have a Social Security Number. I pay $250 per 6 months for a big old pickup. Thats not quite minimum cover but close to it.
You have to pay $100 for a tag (number plate) plus about $30 a year depending on the weight of car.
Let your insurance run out and you have to return the tag or get fined ,I think thats your $100 gone, I've never let that happen. All the various agencies seem to be able to access each others computer records so you can't get away with letting anything run out.
If you have a car over 30 years old you don't have to pay the $100 for tags, thats partly why I also have an old TR6 sports car.
If you are here only a few weeks a year its cheaper to rent a car.
And you have to pay sales tax (7%) when you register the car in your name, yes they collect it on every change of ownership.
Any other questions please ask away.

    A couple of points:

I understand that officially if you enter on a Visa Waiver and stay for 3 weeks you should declare when you are leaving and your license expires when you leave.

I would take issue on your insurance costs however; as I do not believe they are representative. I appreciate you say it is minimum cover but I wonder how many people appreciate what that means!

I cannot think that for $500 a year you will get any meaningfull liability insurance. All of my American friends pay around $2,000 a year.
I looked into buying a car and the quote for myself was over $3,000 a year - my UK driving/insurance experience counts for nowt.

I did also look at getting my brother to buy and insure a car(he has lived in the USA all his adult life and has a 'perfect' insurance record with State Farm) and his quote was also in the region of $2,000pa for any sort of insurance that I would be happy to drive with.
Anyone thinking of buying a car would be well advised to check on Florida insurance regulations. Above all check on the liability aspects. It is not like UK car insurance where if you injure someone (or damage their property) you are covered for an unlimited sum.
If your cover in the USA is insufficient they will come after your assets.
