    Wheat intolerance

    Hi
We are heading back out to Orlando in May [clap]. My wife has developed an intolerance to wheat so i was wondering if any of the well known large supermarkets have any gluten free stuff that she could enjoy?

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks Chris

There are sections in a lot os supermarkets in FLORIDA that a products that so not contain wheat but possibly no as many as other thing so you have to look around each supermarket .
There are also heath stores that will stock a few well worth the trouble to shop around .
    Have a lovely vacation .

You can find plenty of stuff in Publix - there is a large selection of oat cakes, gluten free pasta, biscuits and bread.

I tend to stick to porridge oats and fruit for breakfast, salads for main meals with BBQ'd meat.

WDW are particularly good at providing gluten free foods, if you do a search on here plenty will come up.

You have to be careful because some of the things that your wife finds to be suitable in the U.K., won't be here in the U.S. For example, here in the U.S., oats are processed in factories that also process wheat so the oats are contaminated and should not be consumed by people with gluten intolerance. I understand that oats are processed differently in the U.K. so it's not a problem. Make sure your wife does her homework before leaving home!

Gosh you learn something everyday, thanks for that Patty. However, some of the oat products are in the gluten free area which is puzzling. I get crippling pains in the abdomen if I have too much wheat and if I steer clear and stick to oat based products I have had no problems when out in the US.

Have a read of this article - I have coeliac disease and can't eat gluten.

    http://www.onlinefloridavillas.com/o...uirements.aspx

Also search for gluten on this forum - you'll find it amazing just how much advise is on here already.

    This may help you too.

Chamberlains health food shop on the junction of the 192 and John Young is a must. We always go there on our first day and stock up with goodies.

They cater for all kinds of allergies, and we have found lots of things in there we can't easily get here.Publix do a few odd bits but it's hard to find.

We have found the following restaurants very helpful.

Chevy's - the manager is excellent and they created dishes just for us
Villa de Flora - the chef always walks round with us and cooks special dishes as necessary.
    Manny's chop house
Golden Corral is good too , as there are lots of plain foods - salad, meat etc. Also the 'chefs' are out front so you can ask easily. Good for a functional feed - usually our first breakfast.
Outback have been good too - their gluten free menu is available online.
Uno have an interactive computer in the restaurant which highlights which allergens are in each dish
    Subway Salads are good too
Disney are supposed to be excellent if you book ahead, but we have never done this.

We always take our own lunches into the park to be sure we have something to eat. Never had a problem doing this.

If gluten is your problem you may find the link below useful. You can download food lists for a small fee. We find this invaluable as it saves you playing safe all the time and lets you eat nice gluten free things.

Don't forget to pre-book your wife's meal on the flights as wheat-free - otherwise she could get meals of pasta and sandwiches!

I am also a Coeliacand agree with everything Jo has told you. Certainly make sure you book a special meal on your flights. They'r not brilliant though so I always make sure I have a few gluten-free biscuits or crackers etc with me.

Most good places over in Orlando will cater for you as long as you make the server aware to start with. Disney are excellent, the chef always comes out to see you and instead of just saying you can have this or that they will ask you what you want and then adapt it. Well most restaurants on Disney are liek that. I think I have met most of the Disney chefs!!

As long as you are careful you will have no problem.

My daughter is coelaic and we didn't find things as easy as we hoped last year. Publix at that time didn't sell gluten free bread although we asked in three different ones neither die Walmart or Wallgreens. As for Chamberlains we couldn't even find the store. My advice would be to take plenty with you. Disney were great and always went to great lenghts for Emma other than the Rose and Crown at Epcot whom didn't. Odd that the UK pub not even trying! Most resturants were fine as long as you stuck with salad and steak. Use the term wheat allergy not coeliac disease. Unless you want to spend time hunting out basic goods I would take it with you!

I was looking for my niece recently who is going in September as her daughter who will be 2 in October cannot have wheat, eggs or dairy products. I found there were a few available but obviously her age restrict her diet a bit more at the moment.

Incidentally as the family were coming over Christmas and Kaitlan was just over 14 months I bought some of the "Freefrom - wheat, dairy, egg free" chocolate cake bars, from Sainsburys, of which she had and thoroughly enjoyed. This was early December, in mid January I got a letter from Sainsburys noting that I had bought some and mentioning they had found a problem in that a milk protein had been identified in it and to return it for refund if that was a problem. Apparently they had traced it from my Nectar card that I had bought it. Scary eh? Who says big brother isn't watching. Luckily it hadnt affected Kaitlan but I guess someone had a reaction and thats how they found out about it.
