    alcatraz

    hi
can anyone help me with this?

my parents are visiting san francisco next month and i have been delegated the task of fixing them up with tickets to visit alcatraz

they already have a something called a city go card which gives them a boat tour around the island but i'm needing someone to point me towards a place where i can buy tickets to vistit alcatraz itself

if anyone has bought these tickets before and could recommend where to buy them from then any advice would be very much appreciated

    thanks Mizzy

I bought mine from www.pier39.com You can book the date and time you want, I then picked up my tickets before my trip.

Never actually done the Alcatraz trip although I understand it is well worth doing. However having I do know that if you get to SF with the intention of getting on a trip there are unlikely to be places for about 3 days so getting tickets in advance appears to be essential.

Its very good, make sure you pay the extra (only a couple of $) for the audio option.

it's the audio tour i have been asked to book

just been reading into the details of this trip and i don't think my parents realise that they need to be able to hike 1/2mile at a 12% uphill gradient

off to theirs at lunch time to explain all

Mizzy it is quite steep as you get off the ferry, but they can take it at their own pace. Once they've walked the first 5 or 10 minutes it's flat after that, and then of course downhill all the way back. Unless they have particular problems they'll be OK.

We booked the day before at the Pier and there is also a night time tour which gives you a great view of San Fran from Alcatraz. Recommend a trip to Sausilito too - but you don't usually need to book this.

As jill syas, it wasn't really that bad, though maybe a problem to some very large or disabled people. They do run a large golf type buggy up the hill for those who really can't make the climb, but it doesn't go that often. With a gentle stroll and stopping to admire the view most are OK, you can take as much time there as you want because you catch whatever boat back you want
