why do the daft sods give you 2 keys on a metal wired loop, so you cant get the spare off? i know they prob think you would lose the spare etc but its so much easier and more comfortable to walk round the parks with only one key and not 2 keys and a fob in your pocket.

has anybody ever cut the loop off?[/quote]Nope, because they charge you even more for a lost key than they do for one locked in the car!

    $145 to be precise[msnoo][msncry]
On 2nd day of our holiday, we were going out to RTG but couldn't find car keys anywhere. Turned house upside down, searched high and low for 2 hours eventually gave in and rang Dollar. They sent out a local locksmith. I decided to walk to Publix and off I set leaving everyone else at home. Got a few things in Publix and headed home. About hlf way home the heavens opened. It poured then thunder and lightning. I decided to shelter in a door way when the lightning whizzed past my right ear - didn't really fancy looking like Harry Potter[msneek]. As I was sheltering, husband drives past me - must need specs - I'm in a bright yellow disney poncho[msneek]. As he returns, he sees me and stops[clap][clap]
Get back to house, apparently the locksmith was excellent. Peel off sodden clothes, make drink and settle down to read. Neisha (4) wanders in 'Mummy do you want these keys now?'[msnmad][msnmad]- They were in her handbag all along!!! Where else does a girl put her car keys!!
    Moral of the story
If you have a 4 year old daughter, who is into car keys put the car keys where she CAN'T get them. Failing that check her handbag

Every trip, I have one key and Mr CDV has the other, it makes perfect sense to me plus you don't advertise yourself as a tourist with the big rental fob hanging off for all to see.[8D]

But why don't they just give you two seperate keys to start with [msnmad]

    Hi
I have always seperated the keys, they normally come on the wire rope but always have a key ring attaching the fob, I put them onto that key ring upon return and have never had any problems.
It's quite easy to pull the wire from the brass ferrule to remove the keys, but if you have any difficulty and have a pair of pliers in the villa then you can cut the brass ferrule just off centre with ease (this is the weakest point).
    Hope this helps

My husband threw our hired car keys in the bin, yes the bin and put it out the night before collection the next day. What happened for him to put them in the bin? He cleaned the car out, shut the car and then somehow he managed to drop the keys into the bin with the rubbish, don't ask how as I have no idea. He then forgot to lock the car and left it unlocked all night.

We hunted high and low the next day once we realised the keys weren't where we normally put them. We then thought through the moves the evening before and suddenly thought they must have gone in the bin, went outside to find the rubbish had already been collected along with our keys.

Our realtor was waiting to show us some villas to buy and was extremely patient whilst we waited for the re-placement car along with a bill I think in the region of $200-$300 can't remember the exact cost, 4 years ago now.

They arrived about an hour later but the biggest problem they had was that because the car was parked nose in first they couldn't release the front wheels (for some reason you need the key) so ended up with massive tyre marks all the way down the drive where the car had to be dragged onto the lorry. Had the car been parked the other way round the tyre marks would have been minimal, so embarrasing!!

So now I have the keys once the car has been locked.

I am glad that I am not the only one doing this, I got locked out of my car yesterday, I opened the boot to put all the school bags, lunch boxes etc(and accidently put the car key in as well) then closed the boot!! I hadn't unlocked the doors, also I had left the house keys in the car, I was well and truly stuck, luckily my friend came and rescued me and the kids, I had to camp out at her house until my husband came with the spare key!! In future I will unlock the doors before I open the boot!

We spent the day by the pool in our villa. By the time I went out to the car it was like an oven. So I thought I would make it nice and cool for the family, switched on the engine with the air con and left it running, went back inside. Came out again a few minutes later expecting to find a lovely cool car, only to discover that the car was fitted with an automatic locking system. $40 for a locksmith to open it up

We asked why the put the two keys on a wire ring and they said just cut the wire if you want to separate the keys so problem. We now do that and I always have one in my purse which never gets left anywhere. The only thing you have to remember is to return the two keys at the end of the holiday.
