    More Hand luggage queries

    Last minute stuff

I want to take my camera bag on board with me which will have my Digital Camera my Video Camera and my Sat Nav (thanks Martin)

I am going to be bombarded with requests to turn them on/take them apart etc in fact is it OK to actually take them as hand luggage??

    Cheers in advance

The main issue is whether they will fit in the 1 small bag you are allowed to carry-on. (If you aren't flying in the next day or so the bag size limits are likely to be increased very soon.)

The items themselves are OK as carry-on and you shouldn't be asked to turn them on and off but you might have to remove them from your bag at the X-ray.

I just got back from Vegas, We flew from Edinburgh, I had my digital camera in my carry on, which was a rucksack. I just had to have the rucksack xrayed, all was fine.

    Although,

A friend flew from Heathrow, she had to turn on her camera, Ipod and PSP at the screening process, other than that everything went smooth.
I know these are vegas related instances but its just what I experienced going to the states.

P.S. Absolutely no delays leaving the UK, only 30 min delay getting back.

The baggage rules at the moment are pointless. You can board a flight anywhere in the world except the u.s. on an inbound flight to the UK without any new restriction on hand baggage size. On the way out of the uk, it has to be a laptop bag size. So one can assume they don't want outbound flights blown up but it's fine with inbound ones. We flew back from Vienna last weekend and It made me quite mad seeing what everyone else was taking on board.

They were also taking cigarette lighters from people, who then went through to the departure lounge where they bought another one. A great help for the budding shoe bomber eh?

I don't have any problem with heavier security but if it's needed, make it work, don't do it purely to be seen to be doing it.

My experience is that there isn't any new hand baggage size restriction on US-UK flights.

That makes it even worse then.

It doesn't make much sense but my take on it is that the UK government realised very quickly that the rest of the world wasn't going to follow it's knee-jerk reaction to what happened. Not by nature being too keen on admitting they overreacted, they have been making gradual easings of their rule and we will see another in a few days.

I think the preferred term will be:

"Subsequent to a painstaking re- appraisal of the security situation and after due consideration of advice from Government sources it has been decided to recommend that airlines operating from United Kingdom airports under the jurisdiction of the British Airports Authority, be allowed to consider a relaxation of the current restrictions on the dimensions of cabin luggage."
