American Express - accepted most places??

I have got one of those new American Express Travellers Cheque cards, you load it up with cash before your trip and use like a debit card, or to get cash out of ATM's.

Was wondering, does pretty much anywhere take AMEX?

Planned use is in shops, supermarkets, buying park tickets - that type of thing.

We use our American Express Credit Card all the time without a problem so I would think you would be OK. There was once when the place we were in did not have the facility to take it, but we have another card as backup.

My daughter used one of the Amex travellers cheque cards this year and had no problems whatsoever. She just used it like a regular card.

I have Amex - they wanted ID in Virgin in Downtown Disney - which I didn't have. Consequently bought the item $10 cheaper in Walmart.

Amex is more widely accepted here in the US.

Hi, we used one in July.

If you use it in shops and for park tickets you should be o.k. But don't think it is like using travellers cheques when you use it in restaurants or to buy petrol.

We noticed that at restaurants a service charge (tip) is taken even if you have your tip on the table - this does get refunded to you a couple of days later. Also, if you use the card for petrol for some reason they seem to take more from your card than you put in the tank (especially using the self service machines). It's as if you have filled up your tank but in reality you may only have put $10 in - this too eventually is refunded to your card but can take a few days and even upto a week.

You can keep a track of your balance online (if you have access to a computer).

We had money for petrol refunded after we had returned home (we were only in Florida a week mind). It's just something you need to remember especially if you are working to a budget.

Don't want to sound negative about them as they are very easy to use and widely accepted, but bear in mind your figure of what's left on your balance may not actually tally with what is on the card on a particular day.

    I agree with Julie
we used it in January , but we did have to make a note of what we had spent
also the ATM at bank of America
    wouldn't take it one night
but the one at wal-mart did ,
found it okay but like the cheque better

Can you claim any reward points using this card such as Virgin Points? We do with our Amex card.
