    Thanks for the advice chaps,

Yes I've looked at the RYA stuff, I'm waiting until I hear from the charter company to see what they would regard as adaquate experience then I'll look seriously at taking a course. I'm in leicestershire so about as far away from the sea as it gets which may make motor cruiser training a problem, I'll have to see.

I'd imagine, chart reading and some sort od seamanship cubscout badge would do. (Although I only have "Field sausage cooking" and the "Stealing jelly worms from Woolies" badges at the moment)[msntongue]

You could easily do the RYA Day Skipper theory paper through evening classes anywhere in the country. Silly as it may sound doing an inland waterways practical course would actually be very useful experience as you have to be extremely accurate on a narrow canal, particularly if you are motoring a 70 foot long 7 foot wide boat through a 9 foot bridge hole. The Florida coast is much simpler after that! The navigation is important though - we once sailed from Miami down the Keys and we had to keep an eye on the depth all the time. Nothing beats anchoring off and enjoying a glass of wine on your own (temporarily) boat as the sun goes down.

We used to sail but now we narrow boat. We would love to do what you are planning though

Hi Macka, lovely to have you back !!!!

...You ought to speak with my husband with regards to boats and cruisers!! He's just done another course with the RYA down in Brighlingsea for 3 days. He now wants me to do the one day skipper course because I never know what I'm doing when driving a cruiser!!! [msnscared][msnscared].
