    Slow cooker

Have just bought a slow cooker and wondered if anyone had either any recommendations for a good cook book for it or if anyone had any favourite (and easy!!) recipes for me to use. Thanks for any help received [msnsmile]

I never used recipes as such with mine, just piled it all in!

Always warm the 'pot' part by turning it on for about 10 - 15 mins with nothing in. Then start layering chicken or any other meat pieces, chopped veg, onions, sometimes pearl barley (but make sure it's not at the bottom as it tends to stick sometimes), stock mixed with some cornflower to thicken it a bit to the top of the pot and then put the lid on. Stir occasionally if convenient (but not desperate if you can't) and also put some more stock in if required. I used ot leave it on from 7.30 am to 7.30 pm while I was at work, do some jacket potatoes in the microwave and not have to cook! You could, of course, layer the top with some sliced potatoes when you start it off and not have to bother even to microwave.

You can use a slow cooker for any type of casserole dish. Always warm the dish up empty for 10 minutes and then just throw anything in, as you would a normal stew type dish. Personally I would avoid stirring as the temperature drops drastically each time you lift the lid and then takes some time to get back up to a decent temp. Also, the whole point of a slow cooker is to leave it for hours on end cooking without the need to be there. Slow cookers are a god send for full time workers. Just experiment with any of your fave recipes and enjoy.

any jar of uncle Bens with some chicken fillets is nice and easy. Or a jar of ragu and chopped tomatoes with mince (already browned) is good for quick spag bolog.

I do Beef in Beer in ours, just brown off the steak with some onions, add a few herbs, a teaspoon of brown sugar then newcasstle Brown Ale or Stout and leave all day. About 1 hour before we want to eat I add the onions and thicken it - delicious![msnwink][msntongue][msnwink][
