No Let -Up In Air Security

No Let -Up In Air Security
    Updated: 14:38, Thursday August 24, 2006

Sources have told Sky News that tight airport security measures are to remain in place for the foreseeable future - though larger hand luggage will be allowed on planes soon.

Restrictions on baggage and bans on carrying most liquids and gels onto aircraft were introduced after an alleged plot was uncovered to bomb planes.

The targets were said to be US-bound passenger jets flying from London, with the explosives hidden in hand luggage.

Sky News reporter Mark White said: "While gels and liquids will still be banned, hand luggage size will return to normal within the next week or so.

"Security officials at the Department of Transport tell me they are currently working on news ways to detect liquid explosives and some time in the future they might be able to offer more relaxation of the measures.

"But for the time being they stay.

"This is bad news for airlines like Ryanair, which has threatened to sue the Government unless the restrictions are removed."

UK airport security equipment can only detect some of the wide range of liquid explosives now being used, they said.

Meetings are planned with European governments and the aviation industry to see what common international standards of security can be introduced.

    One for you Julie:

I have read a lot of complaints from travellers having to watch flight attendants carrying on take-out coffee cups at the start of US flights while they sit without drinks. In my recent experiences in the US it's now become almost mandatory for FA's to walk on board with a large Starbucks cup in an carboard tray!

Being a Starbys addict I want to say way to go!!!! No seriously there has to be one rule about 'to go' coffees bought airside for both passengers and crew.

Before all this happened I had my Skinny latte taken off me at security in T4 and I was no where near the boarding gate so who knows[msnscared]

Who in their right mind is going to buy a skinny latte from Starbys before boarding a plane to the States and turn it into a bomb half way across the 'pond' that is a waste of coffee! If the ban stays I think airlines should be forced to improve the standard of the 'coffee' they serve on board.
