    More flights from Manchester?

Leading on from another thread. Why do the larger airlines look at starting a service from Man - Orlando.

Yes I know Virgin do it, but surely they could get another airline to do this route and still fill the planes. My thoughts would Man based BMI could do it.

Airlines have to get the route first, its a very complex process.

If there were more direct routes available to Orlando from Manchester I am sure more airlines would try to pick them up.

The other consideration is the Orlando route is low yield as its full of holiday makers wanting cheaper flights and airlines make their money through business seats ie: Club and First Class so it may not be a viable option for them[msnwink]

We fly with DELTA and I know you have to change at ATLANTA we find no problem with that and ATLANTA is a very large airport and plenty of resturants and shops so if you have some time to spend the children can get a breakfrom sitting so long , They also fly via NEW YORK now again so now so you can have a choice of routes also they give sky miles and soon you will be onto a free flight .

Back in the late 80's BA used to fly from LGW to MAN and onto MCO and also Barbados. I did the route as crew many times. The flights were full but as Mach said, first and business class revenue was low.

We were all very sad when BA stopped this route. It would be great if it started again, but I can't see it.[msnsad]

How do Virgin manage if airlines make their money off Business class etc? Virgin recently introduced a 2nd flight direct Orlando each day so why doesnt someone like American or BMI do a direct route even if they land at New York (for example), off load some passenger then continue onto Orlando?
The last time we came back from Orlando in May via Chicago our United flight had over 70 people onboard who connected in Chicago to go onto the BMI flight back to Manchester.

The problem is that American Airlines, and others, do not have Orlando as a 'Gateway' airport. i.e. They fly into Terminal A which has no Immigration or Customs facilities.(AA use Miami, New York and Boston on the East coast and Chicago and DFW inland a bit!) It would be a huge undertaking to use Orlando even if they could get permission.

I totally agree with what has been said above about the profit largely being derived from Bus/FC seats(and cargo) and in that sense Europe to Orlando largely does not attract that type of traffic.

Actually AA do a seasonal flight(AA95) from Man to Orlando via Boston. However as you have to clear customs and immigration in Boston and move to another terminal, it is really the same as 2 separate flights. Although this flight finishes at the end of the year and might not return.

You can also get to Orland via Chicago from Man on AA and via Atlanta with Delta and New York with BA(using an AA booking)

We have done the Manchester- Boston, Man to Philadelphia, Man to Chicago and other routes where you have to get off one plane, clear customs/immigration and wait for a second plane. What i was getting at is the similar thing which Aer Lingus operatre in that they have two stops before they get to Orlando so you dont actually get off the plane on the first stop.

That is only because Ireland have a special relationship with US Immigration where you can clear Immigration and customs in Ireland.

I would have thought that if a large airline like Virgin can make a killing on the route with 2 planes per day going then other airlines could also get some passengers. If they don't get much revenue from first and premium how come these are always full on the orlando route!
