Virgin’s first flights from Scotland
Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic is to fly from Scotland for the first time.
The airline's first flights will be from Glasgow to Orlando, Florida, next summer, bringing the first regular Boeing 747 to Scotland's skies for years.
Aviation insiders yesterday said they hoped the flights, although only seasonal, were a sign of more to come from Virgin. Increasing numbers of Scots are regularly crossing the Atlantic, with Florida a key holiday destination.
Scottish airline flyglobespan already flies to Sanford, near Orlando, from Glasgow every day. For many families, Florida has replaced the Spanish costas as a holiday destination.
Virgin yesterday downplayed the announcement, denying it was testing out the Scottish market for bigger expansion.
A spokeswoman said: "We will fly once a week from Glasgow for the Scottish school holidays, and then again once a week in October, for the half-term. It's a total of 10 flights and it's really only a one-off."
However, a senior aviation source, said: "I would say this is a significant announcement from one of the leading holiday airlines in the UK.
"Virgin is a massive international brand and this is their first foray into the Scottish market. Even though we're talking about six flights during the summer, the fact that Scotland is now on their radar is significant in itself."
A spokesman for BAA Scotland, the company that owns Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports, said: "The launch of these summer flights is a further boost to Glasgow's reputation as Scotland's holiday airport."

This is great news for those of us who live in the North West and want to fly Virgin... the whole of the North of England seems to be competing for Virgin (Manchester) seats so it will be great to have more availability if the Scots can fly Virgin from Glasgow...
(fag packet analysis I know, but hoping it works this way)[msnwink]

It is always really good news when companies start to offer more choice up North. Although the company (don't know name) was going to start flights from Birmingham and ended up stoping it.
what really concerns me is that they don't really seem to have done any research on when the scottish school holidays are!!!
I have been trying ot book for next year only to find that the last flight available from Glasgow is on 30 June!
Some of the schools don't finish until a week later and the majority of people from Glasgow don't finish for a fortnight after that!!
There are very few schools that finish in June itself and yet this seems to be when the flights are available!!

Haven't had a look yet myself, but I suspect this has more to do with when the seates are released for sale, rather than when they will be flying.
