It's around 400 miles each way so at least 6 - 8 or more hours, depending on how many stops you make so it's at least an overnight trip and probably two nights if you want to have a good look around Key West.

We did Key west last year from Orlando Airport, we stopped overnight as soon as we arrived as it was quite late on the space coast, and then took the highway 1 all the way down to the keys early the next morning, we arrived about 6 or 7.00pm that night, and spent 5 days in the keys, and loved every minute of it, We will be going back again hopefully next year, but being as we have done the driving bit and seen the bridge etc, we will be flying in this time, to spend more time in keys.

You can also do the relatively short drive to Fort Myers and get the ferry to Key West. Certainly easier than the drive down to Miami and route 1 across the keys.

It's still getting on for 200 miles to Fort Myers and then you have to drop the car off and get to the port by taxi.

The sea trip is a great way to get to Key West but the 9.00 am sailing times don't fit in well with a drive from Orlando without an overnight hotel stop. As a result, it isn't a cheap or convenient option.

If took us 4 - 5 hours using the Turnpike last year to get to Key Largo, this was with one stop for a toilet break. I would add a least another 2 hours on top of your journey for Key Largo to Key West.

We did this trip when we were over in June. It took about 7 hours from our villa at Hampton Lakes to get down to Islamorada. Stopped there overnight and then drove down to Key West which took about another hour and 15 minutes.

We have done this a couple of times now and Key West is certainly worth a visit.

We did this one year, left around 7.00am in the morning and was in Orlando by 4.00 and we had stopped for something to eat.
