Have you tried [name edited] from Glasgow? They had a sale on, flights from £99 each way.
We are looking to go August 17th for to weeks. We are hopefully going to get a late deal (Famous Last Words). If we were going June 15th for 2 weeks we as a family of four, 2adults 2 children 13 & 10 could have booked flights with Monarch yesterday Manchester to Sanford direct for £664 everything included. £166 each

Great price if you could have gone. Not sure you will pick the flights in august that cheap even if it was the day before.
From past experience Schduled flights tend to start cheap then get more expensive as the date gets nearer. Charters tend do the complete opposite in that they start off expensive then come down in price.
good luck with your search.

I am looking for flights around 19th Aug and so far have found Travel City Direct to be the cheapest at the moment.

Unfortunately you have probably picked the most expensive time of the year.
Sadly, with school holidays, I'm restricted to August as well. Last year I checked prices every day in the month coming up to our trip, to see if I would have been better waiting for a last minute deal.
Unfortunately for you, they just kept going up and reached over £1000 per head in the last couple of days.
These, however, were mostly scheduled flights (Virgin, Delta, US, BA) etc. The charters may be different and I wish you well. If you do find a bargain, please let us know - there are a lot of us being ripped off over the summer.

The problem with scheduled flights is that it goes down to supply and demand. During the school holidays Airlines can fill their planes normally without any problems and it seems likew any spare seats can be charged at what ever rate they feel like.

Don't just check the airline websites though, you need to check travel agents, bucket shops, online sites etc...all will have different deals with the airlines depending on how much business they bring in, so prices can vary enormously. The airlines pricing policies are hugely complex - chances are that no two people on a flight have paid the same for their ticket

I have followed the price trends on scheduled airlines for school holidays for many years and I have never seen prices reduce for late July/early August as we approach those dates.
Nearly all airlines have seats in various fare code categories, and the lower priced categories always get taken first. I now book as early as possible and for July 26th flights booked 4 tickets in December all at under £500. The same flights are now £840.
However there are still indirect scheduled flights available from London or Manchester on August 10th for £600 - £650.
Whilst I agree with what you say I am not certain that "ripped off" is correct. Airlines make very little profit on economy tickets and it is simply a question of supply and demand.
